The Birth of a Legend

Eagle was founded by John Marcus Harston Morris (1918-1989).

The first issue of Eagle was released on 14 April 1950 and despite its high price plus government, paper allocations were sold around 900000 copies, a big figure for a comic in those times.

Launched in the early 1950s, Eagle Comics quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Its inception marked a departure from traditional comic formats, emphasizing realism and diverse storytelling.

From 6 January 1968 till April 26, 1969, every Wednesday the surprise came for all children and collectors interested in buying the magazine. Eagle was a British children’s s comic weekly, and not only for them, first published from 1950 until 1969, and after in a new format from 1982 to 1994.

Eagle was comprised in 1969 by its competing Lion and it was reissued in 1982 made another at least 500 new numbers (originally around 991 numbers released) then its publisher Hulton Press withdrew it in 1994.

A team of artists was composed of Bruce Cornwell, Don Harley, Frank Bellamy, and Frank Hampson, written by: Chad Varah and Frank Hampson.

From 17 February 1968, another adventure begins today! “The tales of …Asgard! Home of the mighty Norse gods”. This was a new part of making the offspring love, understand, and familiarise themselves with legends and heroes later promoted in video games.

The articles and episodes were combined in the magazine like a lot of apps on a smartphone.

An app for each episode, adventure, or story, another one for comical situations, crosswords, a new one for written stories, app sport has its place here, cartoons, scouts world, science, and collectors had their apps too and Eagle became hugely popular for everybody.

In May 1968 another experience began: “Sky Buccaneers”, fighters, military action, and pilots were developed in black and white drawings right in our eyes.

On April 26th of 1969 GREAT NEWS PAL!:

Next week Eagle is teaming up with Lion to bring you all their top stories in one action-packed weekly, other scenes with “The Waxer”, “Lightning Stormm”, “The Gladiators”, “Carson’s Cubs”, Robot Archie”, “Mowser”, “The day the world forgot”, “Wild of the West”, on the top of these popular favorites from Eagle and Lion these three great new serials are starting in the first combined issue: “Turville’s touchstone”, “Gargan”, “Oddball Oates”.

A Fusion of Education and Entertainment

Eagle Comics went beyond traditional superhero tales, incorporating educational features. Pioneering the fusion of education and entertainment, it empowered young minds with knowledge of science, history, and technology.

Children were taught also practical experiments at the inventor’s scorner: suspend a small egg in mid-water, model a Torpedo, the fruity compass, the water wheel, model a submarine, build your projector…

Everybody has to wait for the next part of the episodes patiently but at the same time thrilled for the succeeding number, and the bravely awaiting was always reworded.

Recommended lore: “Ghostship that Rose from the Sea, the secret that’s been sought through the ages” ” Philosopher’s Stone “The Search for Perpetual Motion Machine”, Ghenghis Khan – his savage horseman blazed a trail of destruction, these were interesting to read them sitting on an armchair with a delicious cup of tea and absorbing each one of Eagle’s pages.

The Adventure literature was present almost in every item, in every Eagle’s number, for instance: “The Spook Commando” from 10 February 1968, also “Jennings abounding” with Jennings and Derbi, by Arthur Buckeridge, “Que in …Quarrel”.

In my opinion, the best corner to read and make dreams come true was THE FUTUROSCOPE – Looking Into the World of Tomorrow – by Dr. Lyall Watson and others. These are some of the most fascinating articles:

Let’s go ape- can you identify the emotions shown by these facial expressions? there is no need to be frightened of the future.
